About this event

I went on a short exploration of the Greenbrier Rail Trail, and I honestly think we’re going to have a beautiful, relaxing time out there together. From the moment I started, it felt peaceful and well put-together, and the more I rode, the more I appreciated how thoughtfully the whole route is designed. This is genuinely one of my better experiences on a well-supported rail trail—everything from the signage to the facilities seems geared toward making the trip easy, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Along the way, you pass through lots of small towns with real character, and there are free campsites built right into the trail system, which makes planning our days and overnights simple and low-stress.

The trail closely follows the Greenbrier River for much of the route, so you get a constant, calming presence of water beside you—sometimes right at the edge of the trail, sometimes just below, with beautiful views all along the way. There are a few old railroad tunnels you can ride or walk through, which adds a fun sense of adventure and history to the trip. Definitely bring lights or be prepared to walk the tunnels at a slower pace; they’re not dangerous, but the small, loose rocks on the ground can be tricky without good visibility. With lights, though, it’s no problem at all—just a cool, slightly eerie, very memorable part of the experience.

In addition to the designated campsites, there are plenty of nice rest stops—benches, picnic tables, and spots where you can pull over, stretch, and take in the view. With all these places to pause, it will likely be a comfortable 4–6 hour ride each day, depending on our pace and how often we stop to enjoy the scenery, take photos, or sit by the river for a bit. The trail surface is friendly for casual riders, so the focus can really be on enjoying the journey rather than pushing hard.

This trail is especially scenic because of the combination of the river and the rolling West Virginia countryside. You get long stretches of forest, open views across fields, and those classic Appalachian hills rising in the distance. It feels quiet and tucked away, but still welcoming.

The plan is to start in Cass and follow the trail while camping in nearby national forests, which gives us access to good camping spots and showers—always a bonus after a day of riding. In the evenings, if people are up for it, we can have campfires, cook dinner together, and just relax while we talk and unwind under the stars. It’s simple, but that’s a big part of what will make it special.

Please bring bug spray. I haven’t had any trouble with bugs so far, which is encouraging, but you never know what conditions will be like on a different day or in a different season. It’s better to be prepared and comfortable so we can fully enjoy everything else.

If it rains, we’ll still plan to ride. The trail handles rain well—the surface drains nicely, and the tree cover provides a surprising amount of protection. It might turn the ride into a different kind of adventure, but with the right gear and mindset, it should still be a pleasant, memorable trip. I came away from my scouting ride feeling really grateful for how beautiful this trail is and genuinely excited to share it with everyone.
